Each year on the third Thursday in March, more than fifteen thousand graduating medical students exult, despair, and endure Match Day: the result of a computer algorithm that assigns students to their hospital residencies in almost every field of medicine. The match determines the crucial first job as an intern, and ultimately shapes the rest of hisâ€"or, in increasing numbers, herâ€"life.

Match Day follows three women from the anxious months of preparation before the match through the completion of their first full year of internship. Each has long dreamed of becoming a doctor. Stephanie Chao is beginning her career as a surgeon.  Rakhi Barkowski must balance her husbandâ! €™s aspirations with her own desire to work in internal medicine. Michelle LaFonda moves forward in her quest to become a radiologist, but struggles to find progress in her personal relationship. Each woman makes mistakes, saves lives, and witnesses death; each must recognize the balancing act of family and career; and each comes to learn what it means to heal, to comfort, to lose, and to grieve, all while maintaining a professional demeanor.

Just as One L became the essential book about the education of young attorneys, so Match Day will be for every medical student, doctor, and reader interested in medicine: a guide to what to expect, an insightful account of the changing world of doctors, and a dramatic recollection of this pressured, perilous, challenging, and rewarding time of life.

Murrayfield, the Calcutta Cup, March 1990. England vs. Scotlandâ€"winner-takes-all for the Five Nations Grand Slam, the biggest prize in northern hemi! sphere rugby. Will Carling's England are the very embodiment o! f Margar et Thatcher's Britainâ€"snarling, brutish, and all-conquering. Scotland are the underdogsâ€"second-class citizens from a land that's become the testing ground for the most unpopular tax in living memory: Thatcher's Poll Tax. Fifteen men in blue jerseys are plotting the downfall of the English oppressors. In Edinburgh, nationalism is rising highâ€"what happens in the stadium will resound far beyond the pitch. The Grudge brilliantly recaptures a day that has gone down in history. This is the real story of an extraordinary game, told with astounding insight and almost unprecedented access to key players, coaches, and supporters on both sides (Will Carling, Ian McGeechan, Brian Moore, and the rest). Tom English has produced a gripping account of a titanic struggle that thrusts the reader right into the heart of the action. Game on.
"Before electricity carved its blue path toward me, before the negative charge shot down from cloud to ground...before air expanded and c! ontracted producing loud pressure pulses I could not hear because I was already dead, I had been walking." So opens Gretel Ehrlich's absorbing account of being struck by lightning. Only when she fell to the ground, her head and body hitting on rock, was she jolted back to consciousness, back to life. In this astonishing chronicle of her experience and of the physical, psychological, and spiritual consequences of the encounter, the author turns her acute naturalist's eye on herself and on the natural world of the body to understand exactly what happened when lightning struck her. Woven into the narrative of her recovery is an examination of the heart - medical, religious, and cultural: There is the path of healing that she traveled not only with the requisite cardiologist but, to quite amazing effect, with her dogs as well. And finally, there is water, and the ways in which, in its contemplation and its immersion, she learned how fire can be extinguished. Match holders made their appearance by the 1850s in nearly endless, striking variety. Denis B. Alsford has complied fascinating historical influences, patents, marks and over 680 color photos to she light on the developments of match holders from their beginnings to their more recent forms as commonplace household items. A wide variety of match holders are depicted including pocket, "candle-in-a-box", stand-alone and wall hanging models. Katie Trebing was diagnosed at three months old with Diamond Blackfan anemia, a rare form of anemia that prevents bone marrow from producing red blood cells. Even with a lifetime of monthly blood transfusions, she faced a poor prognosis. Pulitzer Prizeâ€"winning journalist Beth Whitehouse follows the Trebings as they make the decision to create a genetically matched sibling using preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and in vitro fertilization, and proceed with a risky bone-marrow transplant that could kill their daughter rather than save her. The Match is a timely and provocative look at urgent issues that can only become more complex and pressing as genetic and reproductive technologies advance. This Just in! DVD of this most delightful of events, the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. The wedding of Great Britain's Prince William and Catherine (Kate) Middleton dazzled the world in April 2011, and this BBC documentary, The Royal Wedding, is a must-have for all royal fans. Those who watched the long coverage on American TV will appreciate the care with which the BBC has edited the processionals to a very crisply moving hour-plus, covering all of the pomp and magic of the fairy-tale day. Even the most ardent anglophile, who's already gasped in admiration of the lovely Kate and her charming prince, will find The Royal Wedding the perfect remembrance of that day. It's all here: The radiant Middleton in her dreamy long-sleeved Alexander McQueen gown, the handsome William in his military uniform, the comely Pippa Middleton carrying her sister's train, the grumpy flower girl, the sea of hats--and the two kisses from the balcony of Buckingham Palace f! or the adoring crowds to see. The wedding ceremony itself is a! lso quit e lovely, with choirs who'd rehearsed for months, and a sermon of simplicity and depth for the solemn state occasion. After the ceremony, William and Kate, newly christened the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, wave to adoring crowds and look genuinely happy.

The disc includes a fascinating mini-documentary about the relationship of William and Kate, who met at university and dated on and off for many years before becoming engaged. The special feature, William and Kate: A Royal Engagement, gives context and humanity to the young couple's courtship, and is the perfect companion piece to the official wedding DVD. Anyone who loves the British royal family, or history, or fairy-tale love stories will want to have The Royal Wedding--and watch it every so often to relive the magic. --A.T. HurleyTom and Ellen Bowen are a brother and sister dance duo invited to perform in London during the same time that Princess Elizabeth and Prince Phillip are to be betrothed! .Fred Astaire dances on the ceiling in this 1951 Alan Jay Lerner musical for MGM, directed by Stanley Donen (Singin' in the Rain). The appealing story finds Astaire as part of a brother-and-sister act (along with Jane Powell) that travels to London at the time of Queen Elizabeth II's wedding. Astaire and Powell each find romances that threaten to break up the act, but that's mostly fun window dressing in a movie better known for some truly creative sequences made vivid by Donen, including Astaire's famous dance with a hat rack and his duet with Powell, "How Could You Believe Me When I Said I Loved You (When You Know I've Been a Liar All My Life)?" --Tom Keogh

Perhaps because we have no royalty, Americans especially are fascinated by the pageantry and fairy-tale romance of British weddings. Few events capture the world's heart and imagination like a British royal wedding. In 1981, we were enchanted as Prince Charles wed lovely Lady Di, gener! ating worldwide attention and massive sales of wedding-related! product s. As the young managing editor of a photo-news agency, Cohen directed a team of five photojournalists who covered the wedding for several major news magazines.

Through more than two hundred spectacular photographs (including 80 pages of their wedding alone), William & Catherine recounts the couple's wildly different childhoods, their romance and engagement, the events leading up to the wedding, and the grand affair itself--watched by over two billion worldwide. Here are the massive crowds lining the parade route, the sparkling celebrities at Westminster Abbey, the bride's spectacular gown, Â"The Kisses” on Buckingham Palace's balcony, and the worldwide celebrations. Also included is a brief pictorial history of British royal weddings from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840 to Prince Charles and Lady Diana in 1981.

Including a brief history of British royal weddings, fascinating detailed captions, and a foreword by renowned roy! al watcher Robert Jobson, author of William & Kate, The Love Story and royal correspondent for four major British newspapers, this book magnificently illustrates the pomp, the pageantry, the history and enchantment of the romance that charmed the world.
How did Kate Middleton, an ordinary British girl, come to be Prince William s intended? Over an eight-year courtship, her warmth, humor, and grace under pressure convinced him she was the one. From University to the altar...this is the true life making of a Princess.

They've charmed the world with their romantic love affair, engagement and eagerly awaited royal wedding. The Lifetime Original Movie WILLIAM & KATE tells the story of Prince William (Nico Evers-Swindell, NCIS: Los Angeles, Law & Order) and Kate Middleton (Camilla Luddington, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Defenders), from the moment they met at the University of St. Andrews to the intense media attention surrounding thei! r storybook romance. William & Kate also stars Ben Cross (Char! iots of Fire) as Prince Charles, Serena Scott-Thomas (The World Is Not Enough) as Carole Middleton, Richard Reid (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone) as Ian and Victoria Tennant (L.A. Story) as Celia. The royal love story of Prince William and comely commoner Kate Middleton captured the hearts of the world, and the Lifetime movie William & Kate takes viewers deep inside the relationship. William & Kate is well acted and no expense was spared to re-create key parts of Scotland and England as a lush backdrop to this modern-day fairy tale. William is played quite competently by Nico Evers-Swindell, and conveys just the right amount of the reserve and wry humor the prince is known for. Camilla Luddington plays Middleton, and her performance is spunky and appealing. The story starts at the beautiful campus of St. Andrews in Scotland, where William and Kate share classes and become friends--Middleton not particularly intimidated by the prince's title, and thinking there's ! no chance for a romance with a commoner, anyway. So they become good friends, and the rest unfolds as the viewer knows--but with detail and charm added to make the story all the more real. As with any based-on-a-true-story film, William & Kate lends itself to the second-guessing of casting. But both Evers-Swindell and Luddington, though not doppelgängers for William and Kate, look enough like their real-life counterparts to be quite believable. However, Ben Cross (Chariots of Fire) is simply too distractingly handsome to be very believable as Prince Charles. Viewers keep having to remind themselves that handsome guy is Prince Charles, which does take away from the flow of William & Kate. But for fans of the Royal Family, history buffs, and lovers of a sweet modern-day fairy tale, William & Kate makes for splendid viewing indeed. --A.T. HurleyThe wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton was truly a once in a lifetime event with people ! all over the world tuning in to witness the celebrated union o! f the ch arismatic prince and the beautiful commoner, the most anticipated royal affair since Princess Diana wed Prince Charles in 1981. In celebration of this storybook romance, Lifetime presents ROYAL WEDDING OF A LIFETIME, a 6-part documentary series that examines the history of William and Kate s courtship from their first meeting to the moment they declared I do.
